Local Walks available in the Waimate District

There are many and various walks and walkways in and around Waimate. These include a Town Heritage Walk which has 30 points of interest, bush walks that take you back in time, forest walks, beach walks, river walks, park walks, garden walks and walks which take you to the tops of mountains with views of the surrounding areas, sea and mountains. Each walk has its own individuality, character and charm.

Mount Nimrod (1525 metres)

The Mount Nimrod Reserve well north of Waimate, was set aside in 1898, by which time people had begun to realize Canterbury's native bush was rapidly disappearing. On this reserve the enthusiastic holidaymaker will find a 3-4 hour loop track (track grade is quite steep), view of a picturesque waterfall, picnic and camping areas.

Victoria Park Gardens

This 7.2 ha area was set aside as a public reserve in 1881. The construction of the banked cycling track began in 1891. The greatest use was for the Caledonian Society's annual games on Boxing Day. In the 1930s, subsidized labour was used to make improvement to the park.

A curators house and plant shed were erected; extensive paths, lawns and flower beds established, ornamental trees planted and spectator space around the track built with a rock retaining wall.

Additions at intervals were the aviary and wallaby enclosure, and the original green house, which has been rebuilt and enlarged. Victoria Park also has a playground, sound shell, Bowling Green, sports courts and camping grounds. This has often been described by visitors as one of the best urban parks in New Zealand.

Whitehorse Lookout (Mt John 408 metres)

From the lookout, there are panoramic views of Waimate, the South Canterbury plains to the east and mountains to the west. The Whitehorse monument at the lookout was created by Mr. & Mrs. Norman Hayman in 1968. It comprises of 1220 white concrete slabs, as well as a 2.5 ton precast head. It measures 60 foot high by 48 foot long. The lookout can be traveled to either by road or walkway.

Kelceys Bush

About six kilometres from Waimate, Kelceys Bush is one of the few original remaining areas of bush left after the 1878 eight-day bush fire. It is a lovely native bush area, suitable for picnics and outings, and a variety of walks. Part of the Boroughs water supply is obtained from a stream within the bush. Kelceys Bush is also known for its multitude of forest plant species. It is on the eastern face of the Hunters Hills and has bush totaling about 800 acres and occupies the lower slopes and pastoral grasslands.
